Tear gas in Athens

After the battle before the battle

Tear gas is washed with water, not better in the eyes, but with milk. Currently, it is good to know that if you live in Greece.

Athens, the city where I lived for several years and whom I love very much, is in a kind of unofficial state of emergency. Clouds of tear gas through the streets, the television reports of fighting in all major cities of the country. Although almost all parts are available at almost all times on foot, you have to schedule each spontaneous detours to avoid any inconvenience. The situation is not easy to overlook.
Now it is Tuesday evening, and downtown Athens is, superficially, in ruins. There are still organized street battles. Now and again I must write to make pauses, as tear gas penetrates into the room. Within sight of burning barricades of trash cans. How can that be? It is certainly no room here to explain exactly, but it is important to note that this is all a bit more complicated than is usually reported, but above all, that the normal pattern of explanation, anarchists against social order, not here does.

The demonstration, to secure more than 90 percent of peace-loving and law-abiding, but very concerned and angry citizens made, was accompanied by the beginning of professional rioters. Masked, armed with helmets and motorcycle clothing equipped with hammers, sticks and iron rods, attacked them, in spite of not quite affirmative shouts of protesters, the buildings on either side of the march. Initially, they focused again on banks (usually with the agreement, since many Greeks, the rescue package, which provides the government to the banks with taxpayers’ money available than theft feel) and various ministries and departments, but also to branches of international chains such as Starbucks, Nike or H & M. But that did not last long, soon crashed and burned them too small to medium sized shops, pharmacies, shops and electronics stores in particular. Arm in arm with arms many protesters were beginning to face the Vandals in the way and to deny them the protection of the mass. Attacks on mainly smaller businesses were also comments with boos and curses. The police apparently had the job, only the Parliament and the Office of the President to protect. Disgusted by the orgy of destruction, and the ubiquitous tear gas tired, I left, completely unhindered, the demonstration. On the way I came by at the place of the fatal shooting, where a group of maybe thirty people still mourned. Candles and flowers mark the spot, all kinds of letters in the words “kalo Taxidi (good trip), Alexi” end. there were street battles until late into the night across the city, even in my neighborhood, according Exarcheia, they came back. The tear gas was everywhere. I followed the rest of the events with friends on TV, and that (because I have no TV) in a little cafe right on Exarcheia Square, in spite of hardly 50 meters away, struggles, and in spite of repeatedly pressing the door tear gas had not closed the only one in the area….
